It’s been 365 sunsets since we took the plunge and launched a business that shares our passion for the family surfing lifestyle. Many more than 365 new friends have joined and supported our global surfing family, and ridden waves around the world with us. Like surfing, it’s been an emotional journey. We’ve worked hard, surfed hard, travelled far and embraced every moment.
Making memories is a huge part of surf travel. So join us as we celebrate our first birthday by looking back at the last year in pictures and milestones. We hope you’ll feel inspired and look forward to future family surfing holidays with Family Surf Co.
June 2019: Surfer mums launch family surf travel company
On International Surfing Day 2019, we launched Family Surf Co. The UK’s first specialist travel company organising bespoke family beach holidays to bucket-list surfing destinations around the world. Filling a gap in the luxury travel market, our handpicked portfolio meets the demands of parents who love beach life, and want to enjoy surfing as part of a dream family holiday.
July 2019: Surf together
We love surfing with our families. We set up our business to share our passion for surfing, travel and the beach lifestyle. Founders Hayley and Celine met on the beach, tag teaming surfs while juggling work, toddlers and family life. We aim to inspire families to enjoy quality time together on the beach and in the ocean. We have personally travelled to all of the destinations we sell holidays to, with our own families. So we know they are the perfect locations and set-up for family surfing holidays.
August 2019: Our family surfing holidays to Portugal take off
Family surfing holidays to Portugal were a huge hit during the summer and autumn. We didn’t have enough availability to keep up with demand, so we set out on a research trip to find more partner accommodations that went hand-in-hand with our brand expectations. Travelling from Sagres to Peniche, with five children from the ages of nine months to nine years old, we were able to thoroughly test every location for all different types of families. More than just finding stylish accommodation beside the beach, we sought out places where you’ve got everything on tap – from surf tuition and family activities, to a babysitter or a cocktail by the pool.
SEPTEMBER 2019: Hawaiian vibes
Our ambassadors are inspirational families who surf, travel and live and breathe the ocean lifestyle with babes and boards in tow. In September 2019, Stu, Becky and Pip Parry, took time out of their jobs at @waveprojectuk and @eraadventures to find out what the big wave mecca of Hawaii had to offer surfing families
OCTOBER 2019: Beach life in Barbados
From September to June Barbados is an idyllic family surfing destination. Famous for its beautiful beaches, relaxed atmosphere, great food and rum, it’s also one of most consistent surfing destinations in the Caribbean, with waves for all levels. Boasting luxury accommodation, white-sand beaches, wildlife and world-class reef breaks, it’s little wonder that this is one of our all-time family faves. And with direct flights from the UK and a destination hardly affected by COVID-19, this is tagged as one of our top destinations for 2021.
NOVEMBER 2019: Stress-free family surfing holidays in Sri Lanka
We love Sri Lanka. A place we’ve visited several times with our own families, it proved to be our most popular winter destination – and justifiably so. With mellow waves, a family-friendly culture, tropical beaches and delicious cuisine, it’s one of our favourite winter escapes. And when you’re not cooling off in the sea, snorkelling with turtles and trimming along perfect little peelers, you can encounter elephants, hop aboard a whale-watching trip and kick-back with a coconut or cocktail by the beach.
December 2019: Surfing sunrise to sunset in Nicaragua
Last December we fell head over heels for the magic of Nicaragua. Escaping the UK winter with its ice-cream headaches and 5mm of neoprene, south-west Nicaragua marked the start of a five-week journey along the Pacific coast of Central America with three kids in tow. Malibu Popoyo was the most incredible start to the trip of a lifetime, introducing us Nica-life, with its perfect waves, laid-back lifestyle, lip-smacking cuisine and beautiful people. Not to mention the sunrises, yoga and amazing surf guides.
January 2020: Cruising Costa Rica
Where better to see in the New Year than on the beach in dreamy Costa Rica? From Playa Grande to Pan Dulce, we travelled the entire Pacific Coast of this incredible family surfing destination, seeking out the finest locations for barefoot luxury. Perfect waves, plenty of wildlife, blazing sunsets and pura vida made this the best location yet for a surf trip with three young groms in tow.
FEBRUARY 2020: All About Us
From features in the national press to our first promo video, we were getting our personality and product out there – and seemingly to much applaud. Just like our target market, we’re surfing parents juggling business and family life. And as two mums who love to travel and surf as a way of life, it was only a matter of time before we threw our expertise and knowledge into inspiring other families to enjoy surfing holidays.
MARCH 2020: Time to Pause
Business was rolling. Surfing families came to us to book dream holidays worldwide. As members of the Travel Trust Association, all of our holidays were financially guaranteed. So, what could possibly go wrong? Less than a year into launching our travel agency, COVID-19 brought surf travel to a grinding halt. Overnight a pause button was pressed on the planet. Businesses stopped. School stopped. Travel stopped. No one could have predicted the onset and impact of the global pandemic.
APRIL 2020: Lockdown Life
Living and working in Cornwall, our location was the silver lining to our new way of life. Family Surf Co. was built on our passion for the family beach lifestyle, so that’s what we focussed on. From beach cleans and shoreline PE sessions, to ocean-inspired art lessons, we felt the sand between our toes every day. As restrictions eased we waxed up our boards and took our family time into the waves. There were sunny days with offshore peelers, scorching days with summer ripples, and stormy days with windy ramps that turned emerald under dramatic grey skies. The sea was once again our playground and we were living the lifestyle we love, right on our doorstep.
May 2020: A Time to Dream
A business grows up fast. A bit like having children, you wonder how they got so big and where the time has gone. While we’re waiting for international travel to resume and the travel industry to bounce back in the aftermath of COVID-19, we’re still living our lives and running our business true to our roots. We understand that some of you may be feeling hesitant about travelling to far-flung destinations right now, so we’re tailor-making itineraries for family surfing staycations in the UK this summer. But we’re also planning ahead so you can dream up overseas trips for later this year and 2021. Popular destinations on the radar for 2021 include the Maldives, Barbados, Costa Rica, Portugal and Australia. Who’s coming?
Travel is unpredictable. But so is family life. And business life. We’ve loved the journey so far and continue to ride the waves. Plans for next year include new destinations, taking better care of our planet and some ethical mechandise to kit you out for your family surfing holidays.
Thanks for being part of our family.
Sea you on the beach,
Family Surf Co.
