Christmas is all about getting together with people you love, so it’s time of buck the trend of over-consumption and spend the festive season having some adventures with your family. Mountain biking

Freewheeling around beautiful forests is one of our favourite family activities – especially when it’s blowing onshore at the beach. Mountain biking rewards you with fun, flowing downhill rides – often ending up at family-friendly cafés where you can fuel up on well-earned hot chocolate and cake. For trails for all levels we love the routes at Lanhydrock and Cardinham Woods in Cornwall, or further afield why not try Bike Park Wales?

Adventure Parc Snowdonia

Much more than just a surfing adventure, here you can surf man-made waves with a mountain backdrop, then drop your board and enjoy an array adrenaline activities – indoors and out. Scale the indoor climbing wall, try your skills on the ninja assault course, whizz down the zip line or roll along the pump track. With a surfside kitchen and spa facilities to boot, it’s an all-round adventure fix. 

Hit the South West Coast Path

Soak up the sea views, scaling from cliff tops to sandy coves, along the South West Coast Path. Spanning 630 miles from Somerset to Dorset, there are walks for all ages and abilities. For buggy-friendly trails we love Marazion to Penzance or Polzeath to Daymer Bay, or for a real workout and gob-smacking views tackle Hartland Quay to Morwenstow.

Wake surfing with Camel Ski School

No waves? No problem. Ride the waves generated by a speed boat on the stunning Camel Estuary in Cornwall. Once you’ve learnt the ropes and got the hang of being towed along, drop the rope and ride the wave face – just like surfing. 

Get outside with the National Trust

Ambassadors of the outdoor lifestyle, the National Trust offers access to coast and countryside locations across the UK – with somewhere for all levels of family adventure. Take a walk to the foot of a 30ft waterfall at Lydford gorge, stand beside the lighthouse and spot seals at Godrevy, or roll down a giant hill in the grounds of Dunster Castle.
