The Martinhal is a luxury beach resort offering a range of family accommodation from apartments to villas, all with access to an array of facilities including kids clubs, sports, restaurants and a spa.

Best time to go: The western Algarve boasts sunshine and waves year-round. However, the best time for a family surfing holiday with is Easter to October (up to December if you don’t mind packing a woolly jumper), with temperatures rising from 18C (spring) to 28C in mid summer. With a mix of protected south-facing beaches and west-facing beaches, there is surf for all levels from beginners to experts. The beach at Martinhal is sheltered and perfect for many watersports including windsurfing and paddle boarding, however you will usually have to drive a short distance to get to nearby surf beaches.

There is a range of accommodation to choose from according to your family dynamics and budget, but whatever accommodation you choose, expect a deluxe home-from-home with creature comforts at your fingertips. Little luxuries include bathrobes, beach towels and a welcome pack of food and drink.
- Bay Houses (2/3 bedrooms) are the most spacious and secluded, with incredible views of the Nature Reserve and ocean from upstairs open-plan living spaces.
- Ocean Houses (2/3 bedrooms) are at the heart of the resort, also boasting upside-down living, so that you can make the most of the divine sea views.
- Garden Houses (2/3 bedrooms) are semi-detached and nestled in an area of indigenous parkland.
- There are also one bedroom-apartments and hotel rooms that are suitable for smaller families.
- If you're looking for a large family pile, there is also a collection of exclusive villas with private gardens and swimming pools.

- It’s 5 minutes’ drive to Tonel Beach, where you can hit the waves or spend the days playing in the rock pools and soaking up the scenery of Cape St. Vicente and the lighthouse.
- Praia do Beliche is less then 10-minutes’ drive – a sheltered surfing beach backed by cliffs. If you’ve got tots in tow be aware that it’s a steep descent from the car park to the sand.
- It’s 20 minutes’ drive to Vila do Bispo, where you can fork off to many rugged surfing beaches on the west coast, including Castelejo, Cordoama and Amado.
